Mine Water Transfer System and Treatment Plant Design
Project Highlights
Integrated Sustainability designed a mine water transfer system and treatment plant, focusing on removing ammonia and nitrate using biological methods. The system handled seasonal water extraction and discharge with minimal land disturbance, including layflat hoses and heat-traced pipelines.
Project Deliverables
- Reviewed site-specific geochemistry and water balance to define influent loading and identified opportunities for flow equalization and source control
- Developed a treatment process using biological methods to target ammonia and nitrate species with high removal efficiency
- Designed water transfer and treatment infrastructure to meet regulatory discharge criteria with minimal operational complexity
- Incorporated low-impact layout strategies to limit disturbance to ecologically sensitive areas, including old growth forest
- Supported operational planning with treatment designs that balance performance, reliability, and footprint constraints
- Outlined the biological kinetics and design parameters to manage cold-weather treatment efficiency, particularly for slow-growing Nitrobacter in the nitrification phase
