Preliminary design can become underdeveloped for investment review or over-engineered before the project is ready. Our approach first identifies which regulatory, process, facility, cost, and delivery decisions must be resolved for permitting and FID, which assumptions can remain open, and what evidence is required to close the material gaps.

Engineering effort is then concentrated where it will improve project confidence. Chemical modelling, testing, regulatory engagement, technology review, and full-discipline design are applied according to project complexity rather than as a fixed scope. From here, our in-house fabrication, equipment integration, commissioning, and operating experience help test assumptions against downstream execution.

Our site data is getting old. Can we still reach FID using the information we have?

Potentially. Existing studies may provide a credible starting point and an indicative cost basis, but changed site conditions and advances in treatment technology may leave lower-cost pathways unexplored. Updated site understanding can reduce unnecessary design margins, treatment intensity, and capital requirements while strengthening confidence in the FID cost basis.

We already have a concept from another engineering team. Do you need to start again?

No. Existing feasibility studies, owner-developed concepts, third-party designs, technology assessments, and upgrade plans can all provide a starting point. The work is reviewed to confirm which assumptions remain valid, identify gaps that could affect permitting or cost, and advance the usable technical basis without repeating work that remains defensible.

How do you reduce the potential for redesign if the regulator interprets the treatment or monitoring requirements differently?

Regulatory feedback is expected and helps refine the project basis. When necessary, our regulatory engagement services test how policy, precedent, evidence, and reviewer discretion are likely to apply to the specific project. This is particularly valuable for complex sites, less-established technologies, or permitting approaches that depend on site-specific evidence or where interpretation variation is anticipated.

What gives us confidence that the selected vendor technology will remain operable over the life of the facility?

A Technology Selection Study examines demonstrated performance, operating complexity, maintainability, consumable and spare-part availability, replaceability, supplier dependence, lifecycle cost, and technical support. These judgements draw on current market knowledge, equipment integration experience, and direct lessons from active water treatment operations. Selection reflects whole-life operability rather than vendor familiarity or headline performance alone.

When is site-specific bench-scale or pilot testing worth the additional time and cost?

Testing is valuable where a credible treatment alternative could reduce cost, complexity, or operating intensity but lacks sufficient site-specific evidence to support selection or permitting. Bench-scale and pilot programs can validate performance, identify operating limits, and bring viable alternatives into consideration that might otherwise be screened out through conservative assumptions.
