Regulatory Bulletin, September 2023

Canada Commits to Methane Emissions Reduction

In September, the spotlight was on efforts to reduce methane emissions, particularly with an announcement made at the 78th UN General Assembly. Canada pledged to surpass its methane emission reduction target in the oil and gas sector, aiming for a reduction of at least 75% from 2012 levels by 2030. However, this commitment raised concerns from the Alberta Minister of Environment and Protected Areas, who questioned the constitutionality of such a policy that could significantly impact the oil and gas industry without sufficient consultation.

Furthermore, the Government of Canada took proactive steps by allocating funds for the implementation of automation systems and monitoring technologies aimed at curbing methane emissions in Canadian landfills.

In addition to these developments, this update encompasses important changes to Directive 020: Well Abandonment and Directive 071: Emergency Preparedness and Response, as issued by the Alberta Energy Regulator.
