project details

Feasibility Assessment of Short-Term & Long-Term Residual Solids Management for a Municipality

project overview

Integrated Sustainability delivered a feasibility study to review and assess the feasibility of 4 short-term and long-term solutions for the management of residual solids from a municipal water treatment plant including passive and mechanical dewatering processes and other innovative options.

project deliverables

  • Completed a risk-based Multi-Criteria Analysis to rank residuals de-watering and management options based on cost effectiveness, environmental implications, optimizing existing infrastructure use, resource recovery and operations considerations.
  • Identified overflow risks caused by 400 m³/d of low-solids waste from flotation and filter backwash processes.
  • Developed short-term dewatering strategies using mobile flotation units and geotextile systems.
  • Evaluated potential opportunities for alternative beneficial reuse of treatment solids as well as identifying opportunities for water reclamation and recycling.
  • Outlined a water recovery approach to reclaim up to 400m³/d of treated water.
  • Prepared a regulatory roadmap aligned with provincial residuals handling requirements.
