Sustainability Options Study for a Distillery

Integrated Sustainability - Industrial Water Treatment Services and Equipment
project details

Water, Energy, & Waste Reduction Assessment for an International Distillery

project overview

Integrated Sustainability completed a feasibility study to identify opportunities for reducing water, energy, and waste impacts in a distillery’s operations. Site data and process modelling informed wastewater, heat recovery, and reuse strategies. High-impact scenarios were ranked on cost and technical viability, providing a clear pathway for implementing sustainability measures that addressed sewer constraints, energy use, and fresh water demand.

project deliverables

  • Completed a detailed water and energy balance for the distillation process, including batch and daily volumes.
  • Calculated wastewater loadings against regulatory discharge limits to identify non-compliance drivers.
  • Developed 6 wastewater management options including dilution, hauling, digestion, evaporation, and reuse.
  • Evaluated each scenario for capital costs, operating costs, greenhouse gas impacts, and water reduction potential.
  • Quantified natural gas and electricity savings with up to 170 tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent reduction per year.
  • Assessed the feasibility of a biomass-fired heating system relative to conventional fuel pricing.
  • Identified operational improvements including insulation upgrades, boiler tuning, and motion-controlled lighting.
