project details

High Density Sludge and Biological Treatment Design for Metals and Nitrogen Control Permitting

project overview

Integrated Sustainability completed the conceptual design of a water treatment plant to support the Joint Permit Amendment Application. The design integrated lime high density sludge precipitation with ferric coprecipitation and supplemental sulfide dosing for metals removal, a moving bed biofilm reactor (MBBR) for nitrogen species, and use of the existing nanofiltration system.

project deliverables

  • Developed a conceptual process flow diagram outlining three sequential treatment trains, integrating lime high-density sludge precipitation, ferric co-precipitation with sulfide dosing, and a biological MBBR stage.
  • Prepared a Basis of Design report defining performance targets for removal of aluminum, arsenic, selenium, and nitrogen species during tailings storage drawdown and pit operations.
  • Created preliminary piping and instrumentation diagrams (P&IDs) to illustrate integration of proposed treatment processes with the existing nanofiltration system.
  • Performed equipment sizing and developed specification schedules for reactors, clarifiers, pumps, and chemical dosing systems for a design flow of 48 L/s.
  • Compiled a process narrative report summarizing treatment rationale and operational strategy for drawdown and pit water management.
