Mine Constructed Wetland Treatment System Pilot Testing and Expert Panel Review

Integrated Sustainability - Industrial Water Treatment Services and Equipment
project details

Design, Construction and Operation of Passive Water Treatment System

project overview

Integrated Sustainability conducted pilot-scale testing of constructed wetland treatment systems (CWTS) to validate and advance treatment performance under updated site conditions. Our team designed, constructed, and operated a year-long pilot under controlled conditions, while also participating in Expert Panel reviews as required under the project’s water license. This collaborative process strengthened regulatory confidence in treatment design and informed upcoming demonstration-scale deployment.

project deliverables

  • Reviewed updated water quality models and historical testing data to identify critical design inputs and water chemistry variables affecting treatability and system sizing.
  • Designed and constructed a robust pilot-scale CWTS system in a climate-controlled facility, using adaptable configurations to assess full-scale performance under site-specific flow and chemistry scenarios.
  • Operated the system over a 1-year period, including establishment, performance testing, stress testing, and end-of-life sampling to evaluate substrate, vegetation, and microbiological stability.
  • Maintained cloud-based data systems with Quality Assurance/Quality Control protocols and automated reporting functionality, supporting adaptive management and streamlined communication throughout the project.
  • Produced regular memos and a comprehensive final report summarizing design assumptions, pilot outcomes, and implications for demonstration-scale deployment and permitting.
