The Challenge
Changing regulatory requirements surrounding the use of fresh water for Steam Assisted Gravity Drainage (SAGD) heavy oil extraction resulted in the need for this study. Through it, Integrated Sustainability was able to provide a quantitative comparison of the capital, operational and maintenance costs of all feasible water options, while validating the basis of design and the technical feasibility of pipeline transport and on-site water treatment.
The Result
This study describes the three make-up water cases and provides a cost comparison that evaluates the capital equipment costs, pipeline costs (transportation of the three different make-up waters to the Central Processing Facility), and the associated operational cost of treatment required to meet boiler feed quality. The study also compared and contrasted central treatment and steam generation against remote steam generation.
